BH: I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to both of the readers in this section: Derek McLuckie and Gill Davies.
Derek is a very fine actor and performer – I first saw him reading the story ‘Getting Outside’ at the 70th birthday celebration for James Kelman at the Mitchell Library in late 2016, and was thoroughly entranced by this (you can watch this performance by clicking here
); the intensity and emotion he brought to the story was wonderful. And Gill Davies has long been one of my favourite readers; at events I was involved in over the years as part of thi wurd fiction magazine, I enjoyed Gill’s readings immensely, both those of her own work and of some of her favourite writers such as Donald Barthelme and James Kelman.
The readings you will hear on this page were not dictated or controlled by myself as the writer – I was happy to allow Derek and Gill to make their own interpretations of the characters, voices, and emphases within the stories. I am delighted with the results of their engagement with the text. I hope to soon add audio versions of stories from the Works In Progress literary blog
to this page too.
